This session brought together experts to share key insights and practical guidance on paediatric and newborn care, offering healthcare professionals valuable tools to enhance their practice. Through expert-led discussions, the session covered important aspects of triage, urgent care consultations, and postnatal assessments, ensuring attendees walked away with actionable knowledge to apply in their clinical work.

Training details

Vikkiann Seeney shared best practices in paediatric telephone triage, covering how to gather a full history via a third party, the importance of speaking directly with the child when possible, and when to choose a face-to-face review over remote prescribing. She also provided essential safety netting advice.

Michelle Caton-Richards focused on face-to-face consultations in urgent care, discussing common presentations in unwell children, the importance of thorough history-taking and examination, and how to identify red flags that require referral to a paediatrician.

Joanne Gorman explored postnatal care for newborns, outlining common complications in the early postnatal period, what midwives should assess in both hospital and community settings, and when escalation to a paediatrician is necessary.

This session offered valuable insights for healthcare professionals supporting children and newborns across a range of clinical environments.

Presenter Somek & Associates

Vikkiann Seeney is a Registered Nurse and Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) with a wealth of experience across primary care, community services, and sexual health. Since qualifying as a nurse in 2006, she has held a range of clinical and leadership roles, including Community Matron and Advanced Nurse Practitioner in general practice. Vikkiann is highly skilled in telephone triage, minor illness management, contraceptive care (including implant and coil fitting), and mental health support. She holds an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and currently works as an ACP and nurse manager at Whitehall Medical Practice. She is also qualified in aesthetics, offering a range of treatments including minor surgery and advanced injectable therapies. Vikkiann has experience in strategic service development, has managed the National Chlamydia Screening Programme, and accepts medico-legal instructions as an expert witness.

Michelle Caton-Richards is a Registered Nurse and Advanced Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of experience, primarily in accident and emergency and urgent care settings. She is a qualified Emergency Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber with a Master’s in Advanced Healthcare Practice. Michelle has worked across a wide range of clinical environments and is currently Deputy Lead for Quality Assurance and Training (Liability) at Somek and Associates. Alongside her expert witness work, she continues to practise clinically as a locum ANP, with a strong passion for teaching, training, and maintaining excellence in urgent care.

Joanne Gorman is a Registered Midwife with a wealth of experience in hospital-based care, specialising in high-risk antenatal and postnatal care, CTG monitoring, and obstetric theatre procedures. Since qualifying in 2008, she has worked on labour, ante, and postnatal wards, providing comprehensive care to women with complex pregnancies. Joanne is skilled in labour support, epidural management, and instrumental deliveries, and has extensive experience in perineal suturing and venous procedures. She has also worked as a Safety Lead Midwife, supporting safety initiatives and delivering evidence-based training. Joanne has medico-legal expertise and accepts instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors.

Jessica Thurston is an experienced Occupational Therapist with a specialisation in upper and lower limb amputee management, care of the elderly, trauma, orthopaedics, and general surgery. She has extensive experience working with poly trauma and prosthetic rehabilitation, particularly in individuals with limb loss due to meningococcal septicaemia.

Since joining Somek and Associates in 2002, Jessica has written numerous medico-legal reports for claimant, defendant, and joint instructions. She has given oral evidence in court and is highly recommended by legal professionals. In addition to her expert work, she manages medico-legal operations at Somek and Associates and continues her clinical practice with PACE Rehabilitation.

Jessica is a Full Member of the Expert Witness Institute (MEWI) and is fully trained in the medico-legal process.
